EDDYVILLE —
Irvin LeRoy Van Loon, 79, of Eddyville, died Aug. 30, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Irvin was born Jan. 10, 1933, in Eddyville to Roy and Helen (Johnson) Van Loon. Irvin was united in marriage on Dec. 28, 1951, in Oskaloosa to Patty Lou Denning. They were blessed with 50 years of marriage and two children, Sheryl and Tammy. Patty died May 8, 2002.
He attended and graduated from Eddyville High School, Class of 1951. Irvin came home from the Army in 1955 and went to work with his dad. Irvin bought the incorporated shares from his mother in 1974. He and his wife Patty operated the business, Eddyville Oil Company, selling Texaco products. The Eddyville Oil Co., Inc. serviced many farmers and service stations over the years.
Irvin was also a member of the American Legion, Pheasants Forever, and he participated in rodeos for many years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and after retirement he enjoyed his home at Lake Rathbun.
Irvin is survived by his two daughters, Sheryl (Brian) Kaster of Albia and Tammy (John) Bates of Eddyville; two grandchildren, Tyler (Danielle Davis) Evitt of Albia and Chyann (Grant) Vroegh of Oskaloosa; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Irvin is also survived by his sister, Carol (J.I.) Wilkin of Pella; and special friends, Jimmy and Dorothy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Patty; and one grandson, Cody Evitt.
Funeral services for Irvin will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Eddyville United Methodist Church; with Pastor Jason Gutzmer officiating. Burial with military honor rites will follow services at Highland Cemetery of Eddyville.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel, with Irvin’s family present from 6-8 p.m.
