DOUDS —
Madelene E. Baker, 95, formerly of Douds and Selma, died Feb. 26, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society–Ottumwa, where she had resided since November 2009.
She was born Dec. 7 1917, in rural Selma to Frank D. and Jessie V. Cudworth Spilman. She married George A. Baker of Selma in 1936. He died in 1982.
Madelene lived most of her life around Selma, in Fairfield and most recently in Douds. She had worked as a nurse’s aide, cook, sewing instructor, owned a quilt shop and was a housewife.
She is survived by two sons, Otis (Dot) Baker of Jefferson City, Mo., and Tom (Linda) Baker of Douds; seven grandchildren, Leslie Heemsbergen of Ottumwa, Alan Baker of Chicago, John Baker of Jefferson City, Mo., Tony Baker and Steve Baker, both of Fairfield, Laura Crane of Selma and Mic VanDeVoorde of Iowa City; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Marybelle Hootman of Douds; nieces; nephews; and a foster granddaughter, Penny Eakins of Ottumwa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jessie Bowman Thomas; two brothers, Don and Clarence Spilman; and a great-grandson in infancy
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds; with Rev. Ann Donat officiating. Burial will be in Iowaville Cemetery west of Selma.
Visitation will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present one hour prior to the time of service.
Memorials to The American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 14955 190th St., Douds, Iowa 52551.
