OTTUMWA —
Maxine Mefford Schmidt, 89, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away Aug. 7, 2012.
She was born Sept. 23 1922, in Highland Center, Iowa. Maxine Mefford Schmidt was the daughter of Rex and Vera Mefford. Maxine married Robert L. Schmidt in 1944.
Her education was received at Hedrick School and Parsons College in Fairfield. She worked many years at the Hedrick Savings Bank and John Deere in Ottumwa. They began farming south of Martinsburg, moving to their new farm in 1958 near Agency. It was there the couple raised their two daughters, Jo Ellen Anderson of Palos Verdes, Calif., and Roberta Ann, who passed away in 1975. They lived there until poor health caused them to retire to southern Arkansas. Bob died in 1993, and two years later, Maxine moved back to Ankeny to be with family and friends. Last year, she moved to the Los Angeles area to be near her daughter.
She is survived by daughter Jo Ellen; grandson, Gregory (Judey) Petix of Playa Del Rey, Calif.; sister, Helen Schlenker of Ankeny; brother, Earl (Joan) Mefford of Hedrick; brother-in-law, Hal Hunnell of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her sisters, Donna Hunnell and Ruth Pearson.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 1 at the Marquisville United Methodist Church, 5345 NE 14th St., Des Moines, Iowa.
