OSKALOOSA —
Betty Parlet, 89, of Oskaloosa, went to be with her Lord Nov. 13, 2012, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa.
She was born, July 18, 1923, in rural Oskaloosa to Troy and Alma Durham Binns. As a youngster she attended Greeley School, a country school in Mahaska County. She attended Pella High School for two years and finished her education at Oskaloosa High School as a 1940 graduate. While in high school she worked at A & P Grocery as a cashier and continued to work there following high school as well.
On June 18, 1944, Betty was united in marriage to Donald Parlet at the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. They settled on a farm in Harrison Township and farmed there for 65 years. Betty will be remembered as a homemaker, and she also served as a caretaker for various family members for many years. Betty was an excellent cook and in her younger years, she catered wedding receptions. Betty enjoyed sewing, cooking and ceramics. She was a member of the neighborhood 5:45 Club, C.R.O.W. Club, P.E.O. Chapter X and Farm Bureau. She attended Cedar United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful servant with the Cedar United Methodist Women, serving many lunches and dinners over the years.
Betty’s family includes her husband of 68 years, Don Parlet of Oskaloosa; son, Gary Parlet of Boring, Ore.; three grandchildren, Edward Parlet of California and Eugenia and Wendi Parlet, both of Honolulu, Hawaii; two great-grandchildren, Adam and Ashley Uyehara at home in Honolulu; her hanai grandson, Michael Taylor Dixon of Boring, Ore.; sisters, Louise (Doyle) Churchill of Newton and Lois Davis; brothers, Gayle (Carol) Binns of Knoxville and Robert (Georgia) Binns of Oskaloosa; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by two brothers, Emmert and Kenneth Binns; and a nephew, Brian Binns.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the Rev. Ronald Bupp of the Cedar United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.
Visitation will begin at noon today at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be present from 4-6 p.m. to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Services Serenity House or a memorial of their choice.
