Jayne Hughell, 65, Batavia

BATAVIA — Jayne Hughell, 65, of Batavia, passed away at 12 p.m. June 17, 2012 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

Jayne was born on May 4, 1947, in Albia, the daughter of John Henry and Mildred Victoria Spaur Marlin. She graduated from Albia High School in 1965, from the Baptist School of Nursing in Nashville, Tenn., in 1970 and cum laude from Buena Vista College in 1990 with bachelor’s degrees in psychology and human services.

On July 2, 1967, Jayne married Leland Bettis, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 2000. She then married Reg Hughell on Dec. 27, 2003, at the groom’s home in Batavia.

Jayne had worked for 10 years at Ottumwa Regional Hospital, where she taught IHCC adult nursing. She retired from John Deere in 2007 after 26 years of service. Jayne helped raise 4-H and FFA show lambs for 20 years with her first husband. She was a past Monroe County superintendent with the 4-H Committee, honorary member of the FFA Alumni, past member of United Methodist Women and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia. Jayne was also a member of Fairfield Women’s Club and Garden Club and Twin City Chapter 258 Eastern Star and is listed in Who’s Who of American Women. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, bowling, her grandchildren and vacations in Cancun.

Survivors include her husband, Reg Hughell of Batavia; one son, Kerry Bettis and wife, Victoria, of Des Moines; one daughter, Leanne Brodersen and husband, Joel, of Monroe; three stepchildren, Angela Hughell and husband Chuck Hunt of Pella, Amanda Beasley and husband Danny of Batavia and John J. Hughell and wife, Carissa, of Batavia; 13 grandchildren; three brothers, John H. Marlin and wife, Leilah, of Albia, twin brother Robert W. Marlin and wife, Candice, of Williamsburg and Donald R. Marlin and wife, Jenny, of Albia; three sisters, Hazel Baker of Albia, Joan Beary and husband, Larry, of Lovilia and Kay DeVos and husband, Larry, of Flora, Ind.; and her mother-in-law, Barbara Bettis, of Albia.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leland Bettis; her parents; and one sister, Darlene Amoss.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday the Batavia United Methodist Church; Pastor Bud Lane officiating. Burial will be in Brethren Cemetery, Batavia.

Friends may call at Grace Funeral Care in Batavia after 12 p.m. Wednesday, where the family will be present for visitation from 5-7 p.m. with Evening Star services.

A memorial fund is being established for either Twin City Chapter 258 Eastern Star of Douds or Fairfield Women’s Club.
