OTTUMWA —
Juana Amelia Hernandez, 80, of The Haven at Pennsylvania Place, passed away at 2:50 a.m. Jan. 13, 2013, at the Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born May 30, 1932, in Havana, Cuba, to Juan Hernandez and Leonor Diaz.
Amelia graduated from Havana University with a Ph.D. in liberal arts in Havana, Cuba, and taught at Loyola Military School in Havana, Cuba. After her arrival in the United States, Amelia taught in Miami, Fla., Neola, Iowa, Riverton, Wyo., and at Hood College in Frederick, Md., where she was the head of the foreign language, retiring in 1996. She was also the president of the Spanish and Portuguese Teaching Association of North America. Besides teaching, she published three Spanish language textbooks and Spanish poetry books.
She was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation.
She is survived by a sister, Ana L. (Larry) Peck of Ottumwa; nieces, Lisa Maria (Sean) Priester of Hawaii, Barbara Hassanzadeh of Pembrook, Fla., and Irene San Roman (Jimmy Windsor) of Albuquerque, N.M.; a stepnephew, Michael Peck of Denver; a great-nephew, Jazz; and great-niece, Havana, both of Hawaii; a sister-in-law, Mercedes Hernandez of Miami, Fla., and her caregiver, Rosaura Andrade of Ottumwa.
Amelia was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Tomas Hernandez.
She will be missed but never forgotten in our hearts.
A special thank you to The Haven staff, to the third floor staff of Ottumwa Regional Health Care Center and to the staff of Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties for their wonderful care of our dear Juana Amelia.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Visitation; with Rev. Bernie Weir officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Alzheimer’s Association Greater Iowa Chapter, 1000 N. Roosevelt Ave., Suite 8, Burlington, Iowa 52601, or to Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
