FREMONT —
Floyd Berry, 86, of Fremont, died Jan. 4, 2013, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
He was born July 8, 1926, in Hedrick, the son of Ellis and Sylvia Berry. He graduated from Hedrick High School in 1943. Following school, he worked at John Morrell until joining the U.S. Marine Corps and was a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Following his discharge, Floyd went back to work at John Morrell for 30 years.
On March 22, 1947, Floyd was united in marriage to (Delores) Patty Bever in Ottumwa. When John Morrell closed, he and Patty moved to Nebraska, and Floyd went to work at Cornland Dressed Beef for about 10 years. He then started Oconto Feed lots in Oconto, Neb., and operated it until his retirement at age 62. A few years after retirement, Floyd and Patty moved back to the Fremont area. Floyd was one of the original founders of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Posse, the mayor of Fremont for approximately six years, served on the Fremont City Council and the Fremont Development Board and served as a volunteer fireman for many years. He enjoyed golfing, watching sports of all kinds and will always be remembered as a workaholic.
He is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Patty Berry of Fremont; a son, Dr. Terry (Louwanna) Berry of Four Seasons, Mo.; a granddaughter, Jena (Mark) Ferguson of Aurora, Colo.; three stepgrandchildren, Benjamin and Nicholas Bloom of Springfield, Mo., and Amber Bloom of Lake Ozark, Mo.; and two sisters, Julia Orser of Ankeny and Ruth Morgan of Mesa, Ariz. Justin Estes joined the Berry family when he was 11 years old. He was married to Barbara, and to this union there were two daughters born, Shelly and Lisa.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ernie and Raymond Berry; two sisters, Eva Berry and Martha Longacker; and Justin Estes.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Fremont United Methodist Church; with Rev. Ron Bupp officiating. Military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and VFW. As was his wish, his body has been cremated, and no burial is planned at this time.
A visitation with the family present will be held from 2 p.m. Tuesday until service time at the church.
Following the service at the church, an invitation is extended to join the family for a time of sharing and remembrance at the American Legion Hall in Oskaloosa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House or the Fremont Ambulance.
Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
