Carroll Hittle, 81, Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — Carroll Hittle, 81, of Oskaloosa, died Jan. 1, 2013, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

He was born Nov. 15, 1931, at Oskaloosa, the son of Verne and Mary Geier Hittle. On Oct. 29, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Jefferson at her parents’ home in Oskaloosa.

He served in the United States Army Reserves for eight years and was discharged in November 1962. Early on Carroll worked as a farm hand in Mahaska County. In 1952, he went to work at Maytag in Newton; he retired in 1982 after 30 years of service. In retirement he enjoyed doing carpentry work and woodworking. One of his projects was building his cabin near the Des Moines River; many hunting and fishing trips originated from and ended up at his cabin. He also enjoyed small woodworking projects; many family members and friends were the benefactors of works, all told, he enjoyed gifting his projects as much as he did making them.

Carroll and Marilyn enjoyed many lifelong relationships with former Penn students that began with them as the dorm parents. He attended both the Assembly of God Church and the Church of God in Oskaloosa. He had a lifelong love for the youth in the church. Carroll and Marilyn hosted many activities at their home to give the youth something to do. Carroll was a buckskinner for many years; he enjoyed going to rendezvous. He worked many years with the buckskinners at the Iowa State Fair selling fry bread and doing demonstrations. Carroll and Marilyn also taught buckskinning and Indian lore for many years. He had served as president of the C.B. club in Oskaloosa. He was a proud member of the U.A.W. Union. Carroll also enjoyed walking in the mall and having coffee with his friends after their walks.

His family includes his wife of over 62 years, Marilyn Hittle of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Deb Kay Carlson of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren, Christine (Dan) Messer, James Andrew (Julie Jordan) Jackson and KCasey (Sarah) Jackson; eight great-grandchildren, Danielle Jackson, Curtis Messer, Catie Messer, Cody Messer, Bailey Jackson, Hailey Jackson, William Mack Jackson and Eli Jordan; four stepgrandchildren, David (Angie) Carlson, Steve (Kristen) Carlson, Scott Carlson and Bobby Neighbor; a niece, Peggy Spencer; many cousins; and many former William Penn students, including Julie Larson and Ali Karazani.
