Max E. Madden, 92, of Keosauqua, died at 2:40 p.m. Nov. 14, 2012, at Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren in Keosauqua.
He was born Dec. 25, 1919, in rural Mt. Sterling to Floyd and Hazel French Madden. He married Evelyn Mudge July 19, 1942, in Ottumwa. She died Aug. 16, 2008.
Max graduated from Keosauqua High School and Iowa Success School in Ottumwa. He and Evelyn lived many years in Mt. Sterling, where they operated Madden’s General Store, first with his parents and then on their own until selling the store in 1981. They moved to Keosauqua in 1986 and were active in both Mt. Sterling and Keosauqua United Methodist Churches. Max served several years as mayor of Mt. Sterling.
Surviving are two sons, Daniel Floyd (Kathryn) Madden of Tampa, Fla., and John Max (Janice) Madden of Marshalltown; two granddaughters, Sara Jane Madden and Susan Elizabeth (Jay) Langford, all of Tampa, Fla.; and two great-grandsons, Madden and Barrett Langford.
In addition to his wife, his parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Keosauqua United Methodist Church; Rev. Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will be in Harness Cemetery in Mt. Sterling.
Visitation will open at 3 p.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with the family present from 5-7 p.m.
