Dorothy Tisdale, 87, Keosauqua

KEOSAUQUA — Dorothy May Tisdale, 87, of Keosauqua, formerly of Milton, died at 6:35 p.m. Sept. 27, 2012, at Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren Hospice in Keosauqua.

She was born in a farmhouse near Birmingham on March 16, 1925, to Robert and Helen Randell Umphrey. She married Frederic “Fred” S. Tisdale on her birthday, March 16, 1945, in Birmingham. He preceded her in death Sept. 24, 2003, along with a son, Doran, in 1988.

Dorothy attended a rural one-room country school next to her parents’ farm, then graduated from Birmingham High School in 1942. She worked at the Farm Bureau office in Keosauqua until marrying Fred and moving to Cantril. She lived her entire life in Van Buren County (Birmingham, Cantril, Milton and Keosauqua) and was a devout farm wife, mother, sister, friend and good neighbor. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Milton, and a charter member of United Methodist Women (U.M.W.) and was well-known and active in the community with church, school, 4-H and Republican committee functions.

Dorothy was active in the family farming operations for over 65 years and preferred not to venture far from home. She was strong of mind and heart to the end and loved nothing more than time, outings and meals with family and friends of which she was blessed with an abundance of both. She craved news of “goings-on” and shared information liberally, whether from that day or 50 years ago. She kept a clipping next to her chair that speaks of her character, “Be humble, Be just, Be meek, Be true, Be patient, Be grateful, Be merciful, Be diligent, Be loving, Be thrifty, Be generous, Be temperate.”

Survivors include two daughters, Donna (Gary) Harrison of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Darla (Dennis) Rahe of Carlinville, Ill.; a son, Kurt (Amy Meyers) Tisdale of Morton, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Camden and Connor Harrison, Amy Rahe (Keith) Lowry, Callie Rahe and Adam, Erin and Maddie Tisdale; a great-grandson, Ethan Lowry; two sisters, Ruth Dodds of Fairfield and Janet (Roger) Haganman of Stockport; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Grace United Methodist Church in Milton; with Rev. Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.

Visitation will open at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with family present from 4-6 p.m.

Memorials to Grace United Methodist Church, Milton, or Van Buren County Hospital Auxiliary may be mailed to the family at P.O. Box 446, Keosauqua, Iowa  52565.
