Charles R. (Bob) “Blackie” Merrill, 81, of Fairfield, passed away Feb. 22, 2013, at his home under the care of HCI care services.
Bob was born April 15, 1931, in Ottumwa to Charles A. and Martha H. Frye Merrill. He married Alice Hinerman on Dec. 30, 1956, at the Willard Street Methodist Church in Ottumwa. Bob was raised in Ottumwa but has been a resident of Fairfield for 55 years. He worked for Iowa Malleable Iron Co. for 31 years. Bob was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea. He was a member of the American Legion.
Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Merrill of Fairfield; two sons, Mark (Tammy) Merrill and Matthew Merrill, both of Fairfield; five grandchildren, Jeremy Merrill of Kansas City, Mo., Austin Merrill of Iowa City, Brandon Merrill of Fairfield, Dustin Christner of Alton, Ill., and Grant Merrill of Pleasant Plain; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth O’Brien, Vilene Given and Ilene Coulter; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Martha Merrill; brothers, Harold, Bill, Bernard, Gene and Ray; sisters, Beulah Kilfoil, Lucille Merrill, Emily Dalbey and Bessie Smith.
A memorial service with military rites will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield; with Pastor Dany Cary officiating.
According to his wishes, the body has been cremated. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the memorial service.
