OTTUMWA —
Father Michael Joseph Rogers, 87, died March 3, 2013 at the Kahl Home in Davenport.
He was born July 11, 25 in Ottumwa, the son of Michael J. and Josephine M. Wilbert Rogers.
Graduating from Ottumwa High School in 1943, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an infantry soldier in Europe. Upon graduating from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO, he studied at St. Ambrose College, Davenport and St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN. He was ordained as a priest by Bishop Ralph Hayes on June 5, 1954.
Following appointments at Sacred Heart, Clinton at St. Joseph, Davenport, Father Rogers returned to the Army as a chaplain. His overseas assignments were Korea, Vietnam and Turkey. He worked with Catholic Relief Services in Morocco and Yemen. Upon returning to the diocese he served St. Elizabeth, Harper; St. Peter, Buffalo; St. Andrew, Blue Grass; St. Joseph, East Pleasant Plain; Mother Cabrini, Richland; St. Joseph, Brooklyn and in retirement served as Chaplain at the Kahl Home in Davenport.
Father Rogers particularly enjoyed the opportunity of working with the Catholics of Blue Grass and surrounding area in establishing the new parish of St. Andrew in Blue Grass.
Survivors include nephews, Larry (Nan) Davis, of Davenport, Philip (Patricia) Davis of Agency and Richard (Wendy) Davis of Suwanee, GA; a grandniece and four grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jeanne Davis.
Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa with the Bishop of the Diocese of Davenport Most Rev. Martin J. Amos, D.D. presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Kahl Home in Davenport with a Christian Wake service at 5 p.m.
Visitation will be at the church 1 hour prior to the service.
