Dr. William Scott, 70, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Dr. William R. (Bill) Scott, 70, of Keller, Texas, and formerly of Ottumwa, passed away Feb. 21, 2013, after a long battle with ALS.

He was born on Nov. 9, 1942, in Coffeyville, Kan., to William D. and Lois M. (Mathis) Scott. He graduated from Ottumwa High School, then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served three years as a radar technician. He attended the University of Chicago, majoring in cultural anthropology and simultaneously worked at Nanofast, where he had the title of electrical engineer. He was one of the first to work with integrated circuits and played a significant role in the development of a laser ranging unit for the B52 bomber.

After graduation, he accepted a commission in the U.S. Navy, where he served for 17 years as a naval flight officer, flying RA5C Vigilantes and F14 Tomcats. He was the author of a classified manual on tactical reconnaissance and the co-inventor of the expanded CHAFF adapter for the F14 aircraft.

Retiring in 1985 with the rank of commander, he earned a master of divinity and a master of arts in religion from Berkeley and a Ph.D. in ancient near-Eastern studies from Johns-Hopkins University. Dr. Scott taught at Johns-Hopkins American Baptist Seminary of the West and at Chapman University. He served as assistant pastor at The First Baptist Church of Antioch, Calif., and the El Monte Church in Concord, Calif. He was the author of “A Simplified Guide to BHS” and “Booths of Ancient Israel’s Autumn Festival” and was the editor of “The Stories of Genesis.”

He was the managing editor of the Summit Publishing Group. In 1997, he formed a publishing company with his wife. He was an elder of Westwind Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, MaryLuz; his daughter, Dr. Wendy Bean and her son, Spencer, of Boston; a stepson, Crisantos Rodrizuez, and daughter Xaneeya of Ireland; his father, Dr. William D. Scott, and wife, Louise, of Nashville; sister, Vickie Tuttle; brothers, Kenneth and Dr. Michael Scott; and two special nieces.

Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Westwind Church, 1300 Sarah Brooks Drive, in Keller, Texas; with Rev. Dr. Bruce Brown and Rev. Jim Bisch officiating. Interment will be at Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Lucas Funeral Home.

It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the MDA/ALS Fund.
