BLOOMFIELD —
M. Lucy Cope, 74, of Bloomfield, completed her earthly journey Feb. 22, 2013, at Davis County Hospital Long Term Care.
The youngest child of Dewey and Nellie Rose Latta Small, she was born in Savannah on Nov. 21, 1938, and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1956. In 1958, she was married in the now-historical Savannah Christian Church, which was then located in Savannah. They had one son in 1967.
Lucy’s greatest accomplishment in life was her son Scott and his 9-year-old daughter, Hanna Rose Cope. She and Hanna had weekend “PJ parties,” which she cherished. Hanna’s hugs, kisses and love were totally unconditional, and they enjoyed a very special bond. Hanna chose a very unique nickname for her grandma, “Papa Lucy.” No one could imagine how or why she came up with the name, but it was music to Lucy’s ears and brought her many, many smiles.
Lucy was affiliated with the Grace Pointe Church of the Nazarene in Bloomfield. Pastor Dick Allen and his wife, Jan, Carole Wixom and the entire congregation were extremely prayerful and helpful to her during her long illness.
Surviving her are son, Scott Alan Cope of Centerville; granddaughter, Hanna Rose Cope; a sister, Norma Lee Smothers of Bloomfield; as well as many nieces, nephews, special friends and relatives whom she called her “Earth Angels.”
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Maurine Forsythe, Dewey Ray “Bud” Small, Bobby L. Small, Shirley Smith and Billy Gene Small, who died in infancy; two nephews, Danny Small and Robert (Sonny) Forsythe; a niece, Teresa Small; as well as her paternal and maternal grandparents.
At Lucy’s request, cremation has been accorded, and no services are being held. Her cremains will be scattered at a later date.
A memorial has been established for Hanna’s college fund and may be sent to the family at 604 E. Cottage St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
“One day you will read in the paper that I died. Don’t believe a word of it! I’ll be more alive than ever!”
Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
