Harold Mick, 81, Albia

ALBIA — Harold Lee Mick, 81, of Albia, left our world but not our hearts on Feb. 21, 2012.

Harold was born Sept. 25, 1930, to the late Frederick Lyman and Sylvia Olsen Mick. Harold married Gloria Barnhill Mick Sept. 23, 1950, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

The great love Harold had for others, and they for him, was evident in the many visitors and notes sent from family and friends to support Harold and each other in his final months.

Harold graduated from Bussey High School in 1948. He attended the University of Iowa for two years before entering the U.S. Marine Corp on Dec. 10, 1951. Harold was proud to be a U.S. Marine. He served during the Korean War at Cherry Point, N.C. After serving in the United States Marine Corp, Harold and Gloria returned home to Albia in 1955, where they built and operated Mick’s Drive In restaurant. In 1960, Mick’s Furniture and Appliance was established in Albia. During the 51 years at Mick’s Furniture and Appliance, he was a Whirlpool dealer. Harold spent his career building relationships with the community and customers. Harold’s passions and interests were helping others and giving back. Harold valued the friendships he made and was thankful he could help others. Harold was proud and supportive of his family. The community and education were important to Harold and Gloria. They both are supporters of the Albia Community Schools. Both helped encourage Albia graduates to pursue their education with the Harold and Gloria Mick Scholarship. This tradition will continue. Harold served as board president with Area Education Agency since its origin in 1974. For 37 years, Harold was honored to be the only active president. Harold considered the AEA his second family. He was committed to improving education. He believed strongly in the quality and equity of education for all learners. Along with his wife Gloria, Harold received much recognition for service in the community.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; sons, Doyle (Tina) and Dave (Lois); and brother, B.E. (Pat, deceased); proud grandfather to Jenni (Eric) Bishop, Sara (Jimmie) Summers, Adam (Jill) Mick, Lindsey Mick, Neal (Molly), Mick, Curt Mick, Nate (Kerri) Fosenburg and Kara (Matt) Case; Harold was a great-grandfather to Rebecca Summers, Jesse Bishop, Austin Summers, Jacob Bishop, Elijah Bishop, Henry Fosenburg, Caden Case, Mia Case, Katie Fosenburg, Fletcher Mick and Brynlee Mick.
