OTTUMWA —
Mary Anne Pirrone, 90, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away Jan. 23, 2013, in Los Angeles, Calif.
Mary Anne was born in Ottumwa to Nicholas and Anna Herber on Feb. 16, 1922.
Mary Anne attended St. Joseph’s Academy and Ottumwa Heights College, later received a bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport and a master’s degree from the University of Southern California. She moved from Iowa to Santa Paula, Calif., in 1946, where she taught business courses at Santa Paula High School until her retirement. Mary Anne was a survivor of polio as a young adult, an obstacle that did not prevent her from achieving a successful career as an educator. Her attitude was always cheerful and positive, and she was very considerate of the interests of others. Mary Anne was a devout Catholic, which served as a cohesive centerpiece of her life. It may be said with conviction that the world is a better place because of the presence of Mary Anne Pirrone for 90 years.
She is survived by her sister, Frances Runnells of Lancaster, Calif.; and her brother, Bernard Herber of La Jolla, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death be her parents; her husband, Leo Pirrone; and her brother, Joseph Herber.
A funeral Mass was said on Jan. 29 at St. Timothy’s Church in Los Angeles, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
