ALBIA —
Larry Lee Spencer, 70, of Albia, passed away Jan. 28, 2013, at Monroe County Hospital in Albia.
Larry was born Feb. 26, 1942, to William and Merna (Jones) Spencer on the family farm in Albia. He married Sheryl McCammant on Oct. 24, 1992, in Maywood Church in Waterloo.
Larry grew up and attended country school in Albia and graduated from Moravia High School. He began work at Chamberlains while also helping farmers in the area. He later started at John Deere in Waterloo and retired after 34 years in 1994. After retirement, he helped read meters for REC, and since 1999, he has caught some of the bait, made jigs and did a lot of work that went unnoticed for Treasure Chest Bait and Tackle Shop in Albia, which he and Sheryl owned and operated.
Larry enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He liked talking to people and spending time with his family and friends. He really enjoyed being a grandpa and spending time with his grandkids.
Larry is survived by his wife, Sheryl of Albia; mother, Merna of Albia; eight children, Larry Jr. (Lisa) Spencer of New Braunfels, Texas, Sarah Tackett and Sheri (David) Youngblood of San Angelo, Texas, Christine (Toby) Trudel of Manchester, N.H., Bill Spencer of Albia, Tracy (Jenny) McCammant of Sumas, Wash., Tammy Norris of Albia and Ted (Cyndi) McCammant of Stanwood, Wash.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; a brother, Leroy (Marlene) Spencer of Allerton; and a sister, Betty Nichols of Des Moines.
Larry was preceded in death by his father; a son, Joseph Spencer in infancy; and two grandsons, Justin Tackett and Calvin Spencer.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in rural Albia.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home, with Larry’s family present from 5-8 p.m.
