OTTUMWA —
Carol Eugene “Gene” Orman, 82, of Chariton, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 8:15 a.m. Dec. 20, 2012, at Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines.
Gene was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Ottumwa to Harley Orman and Clarcey Randall Orman. He married Katherine Virginia Creech on Jan. 15, 1955.
A 1949 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he served 33 years in the Iowa National Guard and retired as Sergeant First Class. He was qualified in the 88 armored recovery vehicle. After his service, he drove and maintained semi-trucks.
Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, woodworking, bowling and gardening. He always made the best of what life had to offer. During his four years at Fleur Heights Care Center, he worked on puzzles, played Bingo and was resident of the month in April 2011.
Gene is survived by his wife, Katherine; daughter, Renee Smith of Carlisle; sons, Roger of Russell, Randy of Chariton and Rusty of Ottumwa; four grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
Services were held Dec. 24 at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton; with Pastor Paul Olson officiating. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery following the services.
Pallbearers were Jim See, Allan Auxier, Steve Fenton, David Amos and Dick Warren.
