OTTUMWA —
James Richard Steele, 78, of 451 Hackworth St., died March 6, 2013 at home.
He was born December 12, 1934 in Ottumwa to James Andrew and Helen Bernice Schaub Steele. He married Virginia O. Stocker on January 8, 1961 in Ottumwa.
A 1953 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he served with the U.S. Air Force.
He worked for Cowles TV and Appliance. He and his brother, Bill, purchased Vine St. TV and later moved Steele’s TV and Appliance to Church St. Richard retired in 2000.
He was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church, Past Master and member of Empire Masonic Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M., Davenport Consistory and member and Past President of Ottumwa Consistory Club.
He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing with his friend, Willie Nesbit, daughter Joni and his grandchildren. Richard was a Chicago Cubs fan, and enjoyed his dog, Missy.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Teri Cooley and Joni (Roger) Cary both of Ottumwa; five grandchildren, Terina (Kyle) Nauman of Ames, Tori (Ian) Hager of Des Moines, Nicole Cary, Kristi Cary and Nathan Cary all of Ottumwa; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Nauman and Lyllian Hager; a brother, Bill (Wilma) Steele of Agency; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, James Trevor Cooley.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Leila Disburg officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Empire Masonic Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M., 921 Church St., Ottumwa, IA 52501.
