OTTUMWA —
Donald Eugene “Donnie” Schakel Sr., 52, of 600 E. Madison Ave., Des Moines, formerly of Ottumwa, died Feb. 14, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born Jan. 31, 1961 in Albia to Leonard C. and Mary L. Steele Schakel. He married Ronda Wilson on Dec. 24, 1978.
Donnie had lived in Ottumwa most of his life before moving to Des Moines 12 years ago. He had worked at Pester-Derby gas stations, had worked as a CNA at Sunnyslope and River Hills care centers, and had worked at Clow Mfg. in Oskaloosa.
He raised pit bulls and was a pit bull enthusiast, and was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings. Donnie loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife, Ronda; his children, Heather Dyke, Misty Schakel, Rebecca (Ryan) Hotchkiss, all of Des Moines, and Donald (Sarah) Schakel Jr. of Nevada; 10 grandchildren; his father and step-mother, Leonard and Dorothy Schakel of Ottumwa; two brothers, David (Rita) Schakel of North Liberty, George (Becky) Schakel of Ottumwa; three sisters, Cheryl Carnes, Tina Patti and Christy (Bob) Stevens, all of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary DeVore and a brother, Leonard “Rick” Schakel.
His body has been cremated.
Visitation with the family present will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home.
