Marcella Smith, 102, Albia

ALBIA — Marcella Smith, 102, of Albia, passed away Aug. 6, 2012, at Monroe County Hospital in Albia.

Marcella graduated from Albia High School, Class of 1928. She served 30 years as a member of the Albia Library Board. She was instrumental in the library giving service to Lovilia, Melrose and rural areas. In 1972, she was appointed to serve on the Executive Committee of the Iowa Library Trustees of the Iowa Library Association. She was president of the Albia Woman’s Club in 1952 and 1953. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Past Matron’s Club. Marcella was an artist and has established many exhibits for local artists. She was the coordinator for adult classes for Indian Hills College, and among the various classes, she made it possible for many to attend art and writing classes. She also arranged classes and exhibits for the handicapped. Marcella also wrote and published a book, “Confetti” for the youth of today to know what it was like to grow up at the beginning of the 20th century. Marcella was a 50-year member of the First Christian Church. She served as president of the C.W.F. and spent many years as leader of youth groups. In the fall of 1960, Smith was asked to organize a recreational program for the seniors of the church. The group became known as the Clipper Club and met for coffee once a month, then to monthly luncheons. It soon grew in number by inviting seniors of all churches and then to all seniors interested in attending. After 10 years of luncheons, parties and many trips to special places, the Clipper Club was instrumental in developing into The Leisure Lounge.
