OTTUMWA —
Daniel David Sels, 35, of Ottumwa, died on Aug. 6, 2012, at his home.
Dan was born May 17, 1977, in Waverly, Iowa.
Dan graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1995. He received an Associate of Science degree from Full Sail University in Orlando, Fla., in show production. While a student, Dan was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease. Following chemotherapy, he was able to complete his degree in 2004.
Dan had been employed by Norwegian Cruise Lines as an entertainment technology specialist. He had also been a driver for the group “Collective Soul” and a disc jockey for various radio stations. He was currently self-employed. Dan had a love for music and drama and was involved in orchestra, vocal music groups and drama in high school. He spent a year touring with “Up With People,” which included performances at the Atlanta Olympics, the White House and a tour of Europe.
He was confirmed in the First Methodist Church, was a member of the Ottumwa Police Department’s Explorer Program, as well as being involved in Demolay. Dan was a certified scuba diver and also enjoyed horseback riding and motorcycles.
He is survived by his parents, David and Sarah Sels; his sister, Jennifer McCoy; and two nieces, all of Ottumwa; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
His body has been cremated.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home; with Pastor Bill Hornback officiating.
Open visitation begins at 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Dan had several faithful four-legged friends who were special to him, so we are requesting memorials be made to Heartland Humane Society.
