OTTUMWA —
Sister Leona Mary Manning, 90, formerly of Ottumwa, died Nov. 18, 2012, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Johnston.
Leona Elizabeth Manning was born Feb. 4, 1922, to James and Mary Catherine Smith Manning in Granger. On Sept. 7, 1943, she entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary, professing vows on July 17, 1946. She received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Marycrest College, an masters of science degree in library science from the University of Iowa.
Her ministry in elementary education in Iowa schools included Cosgrove, Ottumwa, Des Moines and Fort Madison. She also taught in Santa Paula, Calif., and Great Falls, Mont. She served as a librarian at Gehlen High School in Le Mars and Dowling High School in Des Moines, finally in 1984 at Marycrest College, Davenport. She retired to the Humility of Mary Center in 2002 and then to Bishop Drumm in 2011, where she resided until her death.
Sister Leona Mary is survived by her sister, Rita Hettich of Dousman, Wisc.; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as Sisters and Associates of her CHM community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James, Albert, Clement, Jack, Patrick and Robert; sisters, Agnes, Catherine, Henrietta and Rose.
Services at Bishop Drumm were held. Visitation will be Tuesday, beginning with a rosary at 4 p.m. and concluding with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel, 820 W. Central Park Ave, Davenport.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Magnificat Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home assisted her community with services.
