OTTUMWA —
Alleen M. Gilchrist, 81, of 700 W. Alta Vista Ave., died at 12:01 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2012 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born April 10, 1930 in Ottumwa to Earl and Daisy May Riley Jacks. She married James E. Gilchrist on April 24, 1949. He preceded her in death on March 11, 2012.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, she had worked as a secretary at John Morrell & Co. and for 19 years at Wesley United Methodist Church. She had worked for 29 years at Champion Bowl.
Alleen was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, past president of Ottumwa Women’s Bowling Association, a member of the 600 Club and of Ottumwa Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. She taught junior bowling.
Surviving are her daughter, Constance J. (Jeffry) Lightly, of Des Moines; a granddaughter, Carrie Ann (Ron) Evangelesta, of San Tan Valley, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Aaron, Ryan and Addyson; two sisters, Shirley McHarque, of Yucaipa, Calif., and Betty (Jim) Garrett, of Ottumwa; and a brother, Jim (Dolores) Jacks, of Ottumwa.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Roger Jacks, Earl Jacks Jr., Wayne Jacks, Richard and Warren Gaffield; and two sisters, Marrita McCoy and Ila Mason.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home; with Rev. Charles Luers officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice serving Wapello and Davis Counties, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave. Ottumwa, IA 52501.
