OTTUMWA —
Mary L. DeVore, 74, of Ottumwa, died Dec. 1, 2012, at her home.
She was born July 30, 1938, in Iowa City to William and Genevieve McDonoyn Steele.
She first married Leonard Schakel then Charles Ruby and later Wayne DeVore.
Mary was involved in the Foster Grandparent program and was a volunteer for Headstart. She enjoyed crafts, card playing, music and dancing. She collected dolls and was known for her rose garden. She loved to walk around town and was very family oriented as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include three sons, Donald (Ronda) Schackel of Des Moines, David (Rita) Schakel of North Liberty and George (Becky) Schakel of Ottumwa; three daughters, Cheryl Carnes, Tina Patti and Christy (Bob) Stevens, all of Ottumwa; one brother, Jack Steele; 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and John Steele; two sisters, Margaret Lowe and Martha Larson; Charles Ruby; one son, Leonard Rick Schackel; and one great-great-granddaughter, Ayra Marie Cosgrove.
As were Mary’s wishes, no services are planned.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Foster Grandparent program in care of Robertson-Jay Funeral Home.
