John Thompson, 93, Drakesville

DRAKESVILLE — John Robert Thompson, 93, of Burlington, formerly of Drakesville, died Nov. 18, 2012, at Great River Medical Center Hospice House in Burlington. 

He was born May 25, 1919, in Drakesville to John W. and Grace Harvey Thompson. He married Helen Lucille Jones on Oct. 24, 1948, in Bloomfield. She preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 1994. 

John was a sergeant in the Army Air Force from 1942-46, serving as a flight engineer and gunner. He also trained airmen on the B-26 Bomber. He worked for Stearns-Rogers Inc. of Denver, Colo., as a construction superintendent and later as a construction manager on various projects across the country, including a large project for the oil fields on the North Slope of Alaska. Upon retirement, he and Helen moved back to the Drakesville area, where they lived until her death. He was a member of Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, a Master Mason and a 32nd Degree Mason and was also a past member of the Iron Workers Local Union #577 in Burlington. John will be remembered for his wit, his keen sense of humor and his love of family stories.

He is survived by two sons, John (Kathy) Thompson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bob (Jackie) Thompson of Burlington; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother, Jack Thompson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield; with Pastor Donna Olinger officiating. Burial will be at the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville. 

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with Masonic services performed by Ottumwa Lodge #16 A.F. and A.M. at 6 p.m. The family will be present to greet friends following the Masonic services until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. 

A memorial has been established to the Drakesville United Methodist Church.
