Helen R. Shepard, 90, formerly of 245 Grandview died at 4:05 p.m. January 5, 2013 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
Larry Shepard, 92, formerly of 245 Grandview, died at 2:15 p.m. January 6, 2013 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
Helen was born January 30, 1922 in Des Moines to Urban and Bessie Carter Brightman.
Larry was born December 8, 1920 in Janesville, IA to Leslie and Beula Davis Shepard.
Helen and Larry were married July 4, 1941 in Waterloo, IA.
She was a LPN, having worked in nursing homes and the Ottumwa Hospital for a total of 30 years. Helen was active in her church, Central Christian Church in Waterloo and later First Christian Church in Ottumwa. She served her church in many functional committees and as a Deacon. Helen was a leader and active in church women’s activities as well as in Bible study groups. She was a long standing member of the Ottumwa Women’s Club, and was well known for her beautiful flower gardens. She won many awards for her flower arrangements. She chaired the Women’s Club Decorating Committee for a number of years and was a past Board member of the Ottumwa Area PTA.
Larry was a World War II veteran having served with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He the general manager for KBIZ radio, handling play by play of Ottumwa High School basketball and football games and Iowa Hawkeye football games. He created one of the first talk shows in Iowa broadcasting, “A Penny for Your Thoughts”.
Larry left KBIZ after several years to put a new station KLEE on the air. He also owned and operated KENA in Mena, AR. He retired from active participation in broadcasting in the late 60’s. Larry became associated with the Southern Iowa Economic Development Association in the 1970’s and retired again in 1988.
He was a member of a number of civic groups; was an avid golfer and served as a volunteer for the Ottumwa Hospital and the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
Surviving Helen and Larry are four daughters, Pamela (Al) Wardlow of Ankeny, Peggy (Gary) Kolbe of Manteno, IL, Jill Escue and Cheryl (Tom) Dawson both of Ottumwa; three sons, Kim (Brenda) Shepard and Kevin (Jane) Shepard both of Ottumwa, Scott (Amber) Shepard of Glendale, AZ; 24 grandchildren including Angela (Larry) Stansberry of Ottumwa who was raised in the home; 28 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Larry is survived by a brother, Wayne Shepard of Columbia, CA.
They were preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy; Helen was preceded in by a sister, Levina Francis Brightman.
Their bodies have been cremated.
A joint memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church with Rev. Ray McLaren officiating. Inurnments will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Helen’s name to Heartland Humane Society, P.O. Box 1149, Ottumwa, IA 52501.
In lieu of flowers memorials in Larry’s name may be made to the Ottumwa Senior Golf Association of Cedar Creek in Ottumwa.
