ALBIA —
John R. Yenger, 79, of Albia, passed away July 5, 2012, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia under the care of Hospice of Monroe County.
John was born April 22, 1933, at the McMullin farm in Monroe County to Russell Joseph and Lennie Pearl (McMullin) Yenger. He attended and graduated from Albia High School, Class of 1951. After high school, John served his country in the United States Air Force from 1953-57.
On April 26, 1954, John married Ruth Fisher at the Christian Church Parsonage. They shared 58 years of marriage, and to this union four children were born, Vickie, Terry, Jeffrey and Debbie.
John worked in the fuel/oil business from 1957-81. He worked at DX, Sunoco and Farm Service as a tank wagon delivery man for 21 years. John worked at Rolscreen for five years from 1981-86. He then worked for the Monroe County Secondary Roads Department for 10 years before retiring. After John retired, he and Ruth delivered 74 motor homes for Winnebago throughout the United States for 5 1/2 years.
John was a member of the Master Gardener’s Club, the Monroe County Conservation Board, a past member of the American Legion, and a member of the Lads and Lassies Square Dancing Club for 10 years. John enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, mushroom hunting and arrowhead hunting. He enjoyed putting in a big garden and was a beekeeper for 17 years. John loved to travel and to spend time with his family and friends.
John is survived by his wife, Ruth Yenger of Albia; his children, Vickie (Larry) Wilkinson of Moravia, Terry (Kelley) Yenger of Newton, Jeffrey (Carol) Yenger of Albia and Debbie Yenger of Urbandale; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Tara, Tiffany, Travis, Ashley and Bradley; four great-grandchildren, Izabella, Treyton, Ainsley and Benson; three brothers, Frank, Phil and Glenn Yenger; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Lennie; and two sisters, Jeane Billings and Doris Sullivan.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia; with Pastor Richard Grimes officiating. Burial with military rites provided by the American Legion of Albia, Lovilia and Melrose will follow at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with John’s family present from 5-7:30 p.m. Sunday evening.
Memorials have been established to Hospice of Monroe County or the American Cancer Society.
