KEOSAUQUA —
Betty Jane Petersma, 80, of Keosauqua, died July 25, 2012, at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in San Jose, Calif.
She was born Oct. 4, 1931, at Oskaloosa to Clifford G. and Dorothy M. Merrill Hartness. She married Lewis G. “Pete” Petersma Dec. 19, 1951, in Oskaloosa. He died July 12, 2011.
She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1949. They moved to Keosauqua in 1960, where she was a 50-year member of the Keosauqua Christian Church and a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and Mother’s Club. She worked at Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren and with her husband, owned and operated Pete’s Dairy Freez for many years.
Surviving are two sons, Steve Petersma (Shirley) of Keosauqua and Michael Petersma (Laura) of Lenexa, Kan.; two daughters, Deb Smelser (Rick) of San Jose, Calif., and Cheryl Griffin (Blake) of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Howard Hartness (Maryann) of Centerville, Tom Hartness of Atascadero, Calif., and Ken Hartness (Ann) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and sister, Peg Minkler of Enid, Okla. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and an infant sister, Barbara.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua; with Lee McIntosh officiating. Burial will be in Fellows Cemetery, Keosauqua.
Visitation will open at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with family present 6-8 p.m.
Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 23247 Hwy. 1, Keosauqua, Iowa 52565.
