CENTERVILLE —
Irma McQuary, 92, formerly of Centerville, died with loving care Jan. 21, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center Long Term Care.
She was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Marceline, Mo., the daughter of Frank and Lela (Monk) McDonald.
Growing up in Prairie Hill, Mo., she loved music and earned a college scholarship for her singing ability. She transferred to Northeast Missouri State University to play softball and basketball and soon met the love of her life, a handsome football player named Warren (Mac) McQuary.
After graduation from college, Mac flew home during a short leave from his service as a naval pilot in World War II to marry his beautiful bride, Irma. After their wedding, Mac returned to serve in the Navy, and Irma proceeded to leave a legacy of appreciative students when she taught and coached boys’ basketball in Missouri. Eventually they moved to Centerville, where she taught physical education and special education at Howar Junior High in Centerville.
Irma was a devoted mother to their children Pam, Tim and John. Her love of sports and music extended to enjoying the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When she was no longer able to attend the actual events, she enjoyed listening to the Big Reds and Redettes, the Hawkeyes and golf tournaments on TV or radio.
She was renowned for her wonderful cooking, and she enjoyed preparing special dishes for family, friends, parties, church and funeral dinners. She was a loyal and devoted friend who never hesitated offer her opinion but would never speak an unkind word of anyone. She was very level headed and yet was known for her sense of humor. Irma also had a special flair for fashion and decorating.
Irma was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church and also enjoyed socializing, dancing and travel. Her clubs included PEO, Mother’s Club, TTT Chapter ER, MXL, Hook and Eye Club and Outlook Club. The Appanoose County Country Club was a particularly special place for Irma to spend time with friends, where she enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
She is survived by her children, Pam (Jim) Oden of Exline, John (Geralyn) McQuary of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Tim McQuary of Centerville; sister, Wanda (Verlin) Ulshafer of Raytown, Mo.; grandchildren, Jamie (Jaren) Tubaugh, Jodie (Scott) McCoy, Shawn (Holly) Oden, Justin Oden, Shannon (Amy) McQuary, Bailey McQuary and Morgan McQuary; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, Bentley Felton.
