Floyd Dalbey, 88, Fremont

FREMONT — Floyd Richard Dalbey, 88, of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Jan. 19, 2013, at Hospice House in Ottumwa surrounded by his family.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1924, in Highland Center to Seaborn Vance and Elizabeth Cobler Dalbey, one of 16 children. He was joined in marriage to Virginia Ann Aldridge on March 26, 1949, in Altoona. Five children were born to this union.

Floyd retired from John Deere Ottumwa Works on Oct. 31, 1983, after 37 years of service. After retirement, he helped several neighboring farmers with spring planting and fall harvest and also had a small herd of cattle. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a 50-year member of the American Legion OB Nelson Post #3, as well as a lifetime member of the UAW and the Fremont United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the neighborhood card club, the 40s club in Ottumwa, hanging with the guys at Waynes’ Tire and, when they moved off their farm to Fremont, the morning men’s coffee group in Fremont, as long as his health allowed him.

Floyd is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia; sons, Craig of Ottumwa and Bryan (Sally) of El Cajon, Calif.; daughters, Paula (Tom) Greteman of Norwalk, Lisa (Neil) Albertson of Fremont and Tracy (LeRoy) Dalbey Short of Independence, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; nine great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers, Chester, Anthony, Albert, Leonard, Eugene, Orville, Lloyd, William and Donald; and six sisters, Clara Wymer, Della Osing, Vera Franklin, Mable Teeter, Francis Kirk Pirtle and Margaret Blanchard.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Fremont United Methodist Church. Burial will follow the service at Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with family present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials may be made in Floyd’s name to Hospice House of Wapello and Davis County or the Fremont United Methodist Church.
