Bobby Gene Belzer, 87, Albia

ALBIA — Bobby Gene Belzer, 87, of Albia, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at his residence under the care of Monroe County Hospice.

He was born on Dec. 14, 1924, in Mahaska County to William and Hazel (Stuchel) Belzer.

Bobby enlisted with the U.S. Marines during World War II. He battled at the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. He married Madeline Prothero on June 1, 1946, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia. He was in car sales and management in Albia for many years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a past member of the parish council. Bobby was also a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, was on the Monroe County Conservation Board, Low Rent Housing, Chamber of Commerce member and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline of Albia; children, Diane (Howard) Slagter of Branson, Mo., Timothy Belzer of Albia, Jim (Becky) Belzer of Albia and Mary Ann Ahlrichs of Monticello; eight grandchildren, Andrew (Bridget) Slagter, James (Traci) Slagter, Specialist William Ahlrichs, Jay Ahlrichs, Nicolas Ahlrichs, Christy Belzer, Judy Belzer and Bobby J. Belzer; and two great-grandchildren, Lincoln Slagter and Martin Slagter.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter during birth; one son, Dennis; three brothers, Roy, Clifford and Henry; and one sister, Dorothy Shafer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia; with Father Mike Volkmer C.PP.S. officiating. Burial with military rites by the American Legion of Albia, Lovilia and Melrose will follow services in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorials can be directed to St. Mary’s Cemetery or to Monroe County Hospice.
