OTTUMWA —
Recently our granddaughter and boyfriend were shopping at our local store purchasing $1,300 worth of supplies. As they were ready to check out, she remembered she forgot her checkbook, so went out to get it but forgot she had an open bottle of soda. She was stopped just after checkout and taken to a room where they kept asking if she had something in her purse. She dumped her purse and tried explaining she was just going out to get her checkbook, but they said she was shoplifting. They said they had been watching her because she had a big purse and hooded sweatshirt. The police were called and took her to jail. On top of that, her boyfriend was given a paper to sign saying he had stole $50-$250 worth of goods. He had just been standing in line waiting to pay when she got back with checkbook. If he wants to go back in the store, he has to pay $150 to the store, or it’s a civil suit. She had to go to court, and the judge was not very happy. There were 10-12 people all called in to the chambers, and judge told all that he was dismissing everyone’s charges as he was tired of these senseless claims from this establishment. He said they were wasting his time, the people’s time and taxpayers’ money. Afterward, our granddaughter said she talked to others who had had the same experiences as she had. After checking, this establishment has had suits against them because of these senseless claims in other towns and had to pay the plantiffs.
These people are not allowed back in the establishment unless they pay the $150, but thankfuly we have other retailers in town to give our business to. This establishment has lost many good customers and money due to their unjust practices. We are all for prosecuting theft, but to harass innocent people is unjust. So now we suggest you have everything checked at counter before leaving the store to make sure they don’t do this to you.
