OTTUMWA —
Jack Vernon Townsend, 85, of Ottumwa, died at 3:45 a.m. September 12, 2012 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
He was born October 31, 1926 in Moravia to Harry Neil and Gertrude Louise Burke Townsend. He and his family moved to Ottumwa in 1928. A 1944 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he entered the U.S. Navy in September 1944 and was honorably discharged in August 1946. He married Dorothy Louise Mitchell on November 26, 1947 and she preceded him in death on February 2, 2007.
Jack retired in August 1983 from the Meadow Gold Dairy Division of Beatrice Foods Co. with 39 years of service after working at the Ottumwa, Topeka, KS and Columbia, MO plants. Jack then returned to Ottumwa and worked for Elliott Oil Co. for 13 years.
He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, AARP, O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion, and was past-President of the Ottumwa Morning Kiwanis and past-President of the Senior Golf League.
Surviving is a daughter, Sharon K. Brown; two grandsons, Ronald Brown II and Chris Brown; five great-grandchildren, Hunter, Hailey, Hudson, Dylan and Keegan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry Townsend.
His body has been cremated and there are no services planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Good Samaritan Society-Hospice, 2050 Great Oak Dr., Ottumwa, IA 52501.
