OTTUMWA —
Two students have been expelled from the Ottumwa school district.
At the school board’s meeting Monday night, the board unanimously voted to expel one 13-year-old Evans Middle School student and one 15-year-old Ottumwa High School student.
“It was just a board policy violation,” said superintendent Davis Eidahl.
He wouldn’t elaborate on what policy was violated, though he did say neither expulsion was the result of any kind of threat.
“Unfortunately, expulsion means they are no longer recognized as an Ottumwa student and all services cease,” Eidahl said. “They have the option to apply to other schools, but school boards from other districts can, if they choose, recognize and honor the expulsion from the district they’re coming from.”
Typically, these students’ education will be put on hold for an entire year.
“It’s a pretty serious manner, which is why it is the very, very last option any board wants to take, ensuring that all avenues are exhausted prior to taking such an action,” he said.
Those avenues include mental health programs, alternative placement and other academic and social supports, he said.
“When those are deemed to be not effective, then we really have no other option in cases where their attendance would be detrimental to the education of others,” he said.
