A very old bell has a very modern job in Unionville.
It’s the bell out of a steel bell tower, according to Deena Hoffman, who works in the Moravia Library.
The town previously rang the bell at the end of the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and World War II.
“The last time the bell rang was in 1973,” Hoffman said Monday afternoon. “Now we use it as an emergency ringer because there’s no siren at Unionville.”
The townspeople have planned a dedication ceremony for the bell at 5 p.m. Sunday in Unionville.
“We’ve received several donations for lighting up the plaque and the bell,” she said. “We’ve got photos of taking down the bell, and we’re very proud of it.”
