OTTUMWA —
You can’t pursue something that was removed once before.
Even so, Wapello County Treasurer Dianne Kiefer has to figure out what to do with the paperwork.
During the Wapello County Supervisors Tuesday meeting, Kiefer told the board her office has a property with one building on it and no one to claim it.
She explained how she decided to write a resolution to remove the buildings on the leased land from taxation and abate the taxes.
“The property used to be owned by the Colorado & Eastern Railroad, which has been defunct for years,” Kiefer said.
The Iowa Department of Transportation used to collect a fee, but now the railroad no longer assesses a fee.
“And that railroad has been gone a long time,” she said. “The building isn’t there, either.”
Supervisor Greg Kenning said the county took aerial photographs, and there was “nothing there.”
And Supervisor Steve Siegel wondered who owns the field.
Kiefer shrugged her shoulders and said the city of Ottumwa could be the owner.
