Maybe the idea of filing your own taxes makes you nervous. But learning about the process could help boost your confidence.
“The IRS is providing more resources for individuals who file their own returns,” said Joyce Lash, Family Finance Program specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
She said filing your own tax return can save money and that more people are doing it.
With the busiest part of tax season approaching, “Resources for Filing Your Own Return” could hold some of the answers the public is looking for.
It is an informational meeting scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Jan. 31 that will be held at the Wapello County Extension Office, 214 E. Main St., Ottumwa.
“The class will examine the new Free File program and tips for preparing your own return,” said Lash.
Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of last year’s tax return for reference.
“We’ll review basic tax law to maximize a family tax refund,” said Lash of the tax education program. “There are new options for free software and electronic filing of the federal tax return.”
The more you know about the rules, she said, the more likely you are to get accurate, favorable results using the computer programs.
Not all tax preparation has to break the bank, experts say. And neither does taking a class about tax preparation.
“There is no charge [to take the class] for those attending,” Lash said.
