YMCA open after cleaning overhaul

New website looks to launch in mid-September

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa YMCA is squeaky clean and working behind the scenes to launch a new website.

The Ottumwa YMCA reopened Monday morning after a week of scrubbing, cleaning and repair. The Y shuts down for a week every year to revamp the center.

“We are expanding a new room to provide multi-service programming,” said Tom Sisler, the Y’s executive director. “We renovated the space to accommodate programs such as youth tumbling, dance classes and personal training.”

Patrons may have also noticed that the Y’s website has been down.

“We are converting our software and going into new programming to better serve our members,” Sisler said.

The new programming will allow members to sign up for classes and other events online, and each member will have his or her own service portal.

Sisler said the goal is to have the new website go live in mid-September.

“With today’s way of doing things, people are online or on their smart phones and they don’t want to wait for something to come to them in letter form or a flyer,” Sisler said. “They want to dial up the Ottumwa Y and sign up.”

Winter hours will go into effect Monday, Sept. 17.

The Y will be open:

• 4:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday

• 4:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday

• 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday

• Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday
