OTTUMWA —
Will the Wapello County Board of Supervisors approve putting a lithograph of the U.S. Constitution in the county courthouse?
Board members will discuss the matter when they meet next week. Gary Stephenson of Fort Dodge has worked several years with his father on the project. His father has passed, so now he’s traveling around the country showcasing the lithograph.
“It’s a very big copy of the Constitution,” said Supervisor Jerry Parker.
The cost of making the lithograph and Stephenson’s travel expenses is less than $500.
Parker said Stephenson wants local companies to pay the total cost of making and displaying the U.S. Constitution lithograph in every Iowa courthouse.
“The copies are professionally done, but you allow him to go get sponsors to pay for the purchase and display of the lithograph,” Parker said.
And, the sponsors and their names would be permanently displayed. Parker said “maybe it’s something the county wants to do” and/or maybe the county wants to pay for it.
But sometimes making a display and allowing permanent advertising to be placed on it could be a bad thing, Parker said.
“What if something happens to Stephenson and his company and there’s no way to take the lithograph out of the courthouse?” Parker said. “And none of us know the future. We don’t know what will happen to a company whose headquarters isn’t here but the company’s name is on display in our courthouse.”
The supervisors will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the third-floor boardroom at the courthouse.
