OTTUMWA —
Culinary arts met the fine arts Thursday as Indian Hills Community College and the Ottumwa Laureate Guild tried a new event.
“Soup for the Arts” included work by local restaurants — various soups for those who bought tickets — and by artists with a local connection, who hand-crafted the pottery in which the soup was served.
Culinary Arts students from IHCC helped serve, as did Laureate Guild members.
There was excitement about many of the bowls. While many enjoyed bowls by art instructors Mark McWhorter and Lisa Fritz, their work teaching was mentioned with enthusiasm, too. Some of their graduates, now working artists, contributed pottery to the event.
Linda Gaumer, one of the organizers, and Jenette Curran of Ottumwa had been discussing one of those former students. Finally, they found the Judd Jarvis Ceramics bowl they’d sought.
“There’s an amazing variety,” Curran said of the styles potters used.
Based on its popularity, Gaumer expects the event will occur again next year. They sold the maximum number of tickets they could, 200, based on the number of bowls produced.
“This is the [event’s] first year,” she said. “Next year, even more people will have heard about it.”
