OTTUMWA — Former therapist Diane Oliver has complied with one of the most visible parts of her sentence for sexual exploitation of a teenage client.
The Iowa Sex Offender Registry lists Oliver, 33, as a Tier-2 offender. The designation requires biannual reviews of her status, but Oliver is not subject to any residency restrictions.
Oliver’s information was updated Thursday, according to the Web site.
Oliver was sentenced in late November to a five-year suspended prison sentence in the case, which began in 2007 in Burlington. At the time, she was a therapist with Woodlands Treatment Center.
She began a relationship with a teenage male under her care in Burlington and continued to pursue a sexual relationship with him after his return to Ottumwa. The teen and his mother have sued Oliver, Woodlands and its director. The suit seeks damages against Oliver and alleges that John Escorcia “knowingly and willfully” failed to report the abuse as required under Iowa law.
Neither Escorcia nor Woodlands have responded to the suit yet, according to court records. Attorney Steven Gardner has indicated additional defendants are possible, though the original suit has not been amended to include any.
Oliver will not go to prison if she completes her five-year probation without incident. She must also complete a treatment program. The judge left those details open to allow a therapist to design it specifically for the unique circumstances of her case.
