Take me out to the ball game: Man granted release from Van Buren Co. Jail to watch Red Sox

KEOSAUQUA — A magistrate judge has ordered a Keosauqua man be temporarily released from the Van Buren County Jail so he could watch his favorite major league baseball team play in Kansas City today.

Randy Aaron Barker is serving a 10-day jail sentence for interference with official acts and violation of a protective order. He is also a Boston Red Sox fan.

Through his attorney, Margaret E. King, Barker petitioned the court to allow him, his father, Norman, and brother, Bob, to attend the Red Sox game in Kansas City today. They have had long-term plans to attend, King told Magistrate Judge Benny Waggoner.

“These ball games are among the few pleasures the defendant has in life. He had been looking forward eagerly to attending this game with his family,” King said.

Judge Waggoner said Barker’s request was “reasonable under the circumstances” and granted the request.

Barker is scheduled to leave Keosauqua around 1 p.m. today and will return late tonight or early Thursday morning, according to the petition.

Van Buren County Attorney Craig Miller was opposed to Barker’s request.
