Ice and snow blamed for fatal accident
ALBIA — Funeral arrangements were announced Sunday for an Ottumwa teen killed in a two-car crash near Albia on Friday.
Authorities say snow and ice are to blame for the collision that killed Zachary Murray, 19, and sent three other people to hospitals. Delaney Palen, 18, the driver of the car Murray was in, remains hospitalized in Des Moines.
The crash occurred at 4:47 p.m. Friday on Highway 34 one mile east of Albia. The Iowa State Patrol says Palen was traveling west when she lost control on the slick roads. The car slid sideways and crossed into the eastbound lane, where it struck a car driven by Melissa Hope Thompson, 33, of Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.
Murray was a 2007 graduate of Ottumwa High School and studied at Indian Hills Community College before transferring to Iowa State University.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family present from 5-8 p.m. He was survived by his parents and sister.
Thompson was taken to Monroe County Hospital, along with her daughter, Monica, 7. Palen was taken to Des Moines.
All involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. No charges were filed in the collision.
