Serious accident on highway

Part of Wapello Street temporarily closed off

OTTUMWA — An accident that caused multiple injuries is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

At 7:42 p.m. Thursday, Ottumwa police and fire personnel received a call of a “10-50 PI,” (vehicle accident with personal injury) at the intersection of U.S. Highways 34 and 63.

“Because of the nature of the trauma involved, the investigation is being [turned over to] the state patrol,” said OPD Sergeant Chad Farrington.

He could say that the accident involved a motor vehicle and a motorcycle and that there were “multiple injuries.”

A damaged white sedan sat on Wapello Street, near Ottumwa Park, with a motorcycle with sidecar several yards behind it. Witnesses said they believed there were two people on the motorcycle.

The motorcycle showed severe damage. Neither vehicle was moved off the road during the investigation, causing part of Wapello Street along Ottumwa Park to remain temporarily closed.

Farrington said additional information would have to come from Iowa State Patrol. Further information, and identification of those involved, was not available from the on-duty trooper by press time Thursday.
