OTTUMWA —
In case you’ve been wondering, Kathy Underwood owns and runs The Steakhouse Grill at the corner of Davis and Church streets on the city’s south side.
Underwood’s business has been at that location for two weeks and previously was at Iowa Avenue for six weeks.
Why does she cook for the public?
“I just like people, and I used to work in a nursing home,” she said. “My goal was always to have a restaurant. And I like to cook and do homemade stuff.”
What was she preparing in the kitchen while she talked?
“I’m making homemade vegetable beef soup,” Underwood said. “It’s how Mom did it.”
Underwood’s restaurant has been open about two weeks at the corner of Church and Davis streets.
What’s the bestseller meal at her restaurant?
“Our steak sandwich is the best,” Underwood said.
She was proud to say all of her soups are homemade. Her soup list includes chili, baked potato soup, goulash, vegetable beef, chicken and rice and cream of broccoli.
Underwood said she signed up for culinary arts at Indian Hills College and earned her dietary supervisors degree in 1994. She also managed a nursing home.
Although she’s from Ottumwa, Underwood spent her early years in Centerville.
The Steakhouse Grill has a soup of the day and a special of the day. For example, a recent menu offered goulash on Monday, hot roast beef sandwich for Tuesday, chili burgers and fries on Wednesday, steak sandwiches for Thursday, pork chop dinner on Friday and chicken breast on Saturday.
Underwood noted the dinners come with a vegetable chosen by the customer.
“Today, the vegetable is green beans with onion and bacon, choice of potato or the soup or salad bar,” she said. “You don’t leave here hungry.”
She also offers fries with the sandwiches.
“I like to make people happy through the belly,” she said. “We opened two weeks ago, and we want you to just come in — y’all come.”
