OTTUMWA —
A number of streets south of Mary Street are scheduled for reclamation this summer.
Work on the grinding of the existing pavement is under way this week. Contractors will mechanically tear up and pulverize the existing street surface, relaying it as a roadbed for new pavement.
Once the grinding process on a street is complete, the contractor will move south to the next street.
Each street will be closed to traffic during the grinding process, then opened back up as they move on to the next. Once all the streets have been ground, a stabilizing agent will be applied, working north to south in a similar fashion. City engineers expect the entire process will take one and a half to two weeks.
A new asphalt street will be paved over the reclaimed base later this summer.
Drivers should keep a safe distance between their vehicle and construction equipment and workers. Please respect posted road closures and work zone signage.
Streets to be reclaimed in the next couple weeks include:
• Portafield Street from Milner to Webster streets
• Portafield Street from Webster Street west to the end
• Loomis Avenue from Milner to Webster streets
• Hand Avenue from Milner to Webster streets
• Harvey Street from Milner to Webster streets
