Body of missing passenger found

Train Dowd disappeared from traveled through Ottumwa

MCCOOK, Neb. — A man reported missing from a train that passes through Ottumwa has been found deceased in Nebraska, his family said Friday.

On Sep. 17, police asked for residents to keep their eyes open for Charles Dowd, 69, who was taking the train from California to Chicago. He vanished from the eastbound train somewhere after the train entered Nebraska but before it got to Chicago. The man’s son called the authorities locally to tell them that the train did pass through Ottumwa.

The Amtrak train travels along the southern part of Nebraska and Iowa.

Family had told police they were worried because Dowd could possibly be disoriented and needed his medication. A police statement said that the conductor remembered talking to a man fitting Dowd’s description; the employee became concerned when the passenger indicated a belief he was in an apartment but was unable to find the front door.

“The Dowd family is saddened to share the news that the body of Charlie Dowd was found Friday, Sept. 21 in Haigler, Neb., an area between Fort Morgan, Colo., and McCook, Neb.,” reads a release posted on the family Facebook page. “The body was spotted by a BNSF railway worker and immediately reported to the authorities.”

Haigler is less than 15 miles from the borders of both Colorado and Kansas.

On their Facebook page, the family has asked that the public refrain from contacting them directly at this time.

“Thank you again on behalf of the family for the support of the many agencies, groups and individuals who have helped the Dowd family during this time. While the family is devastated, they would like to express their gratitude for the many prayers ... and messages posted to the Charlie Dowd Facebook page, and for the efforts of the many volunteers who have helped search for him this past week.”
