Loebsack announces nearly $18M for track construction to BNSF in Ottumwa
OTTUMWA — Rail travel through Ottumwa will get a little smoother thanks to millions in federal funding.
U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack announced $18,309,080 in Recovery Act money for Iowa passenger rail. The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railway in Ottumwa — whose rails host Amtrak trains in Iowa — will receive $17,309,080 for track construction.
“This funding will go into areas of Iowa hit hard by the recent economic downturn,” said Loebsack. “I have long been a proponent of passenger rail [because] it will bring jobs for Iowans, economic development for downtowns and a better quality of life for communities in Iowa and Illinois. This funding will make needed investments in Iowa’s passenger rail system and will improve service for Iowans.”
Gov. Chet Culver said he was glad the investment in Ottumwa area rail was approved, yet he was vocal about the Iowa City project not getting the go ahead.
“I am disappointed that the U.S. DOT did not fund the Chicago to Iowa City and the Chicago to Dubuque proposals. These are sound projects that will help the people of this state, and with the work we have already done, we will be competitive for future rounds of funding.”
While the proposed route did not get funding, Loebsack’s office said the Chicago to Omaha passenger rail planning study project will receive $1 million.
According to a release from his office, “Loebsack will continue to advocate for passenger rail and help bring service to the Quad Cities, Iowa City, Des Moines and on to Omaha.”
“I am confident that an expanded passenger rail system is in Iowa’s future,” said Culver.
Loebsack agreed.
“First stop Ottumwa and on to Iowa City!” he said.
