EDDYVILLE —
The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont School Board this week approved submission of requests for continued use of the innovative calendar and an early-start waiver for the 2013-14 school year.
These requests included a drafted calendar featuring an Aug. 21 start date, Dec. 20 to Jan. 3 winter break and May 22 final day of classes for students in 2014. Graduation was set for May 18, 2014.
In other business, administrators discussed the rollout of new technology to students. Assemblies were held this week at all buildings, which were designed to explain to parents and students the district’s acceptable use policy, digital citizenship and care of equipment. All junior/senior high students received miniature laptop computers that convert into tablets. While elementary students will receive iPads for educational use, older students will be allowed to take these home after a training period.
Board members heard from officials with Indian Hills Community College about partnership opportunities with the district. Board members were encouraged to think of ways that IHCC can help the district prepare young people to be a productive work force.
“If there are things we can do to partner, we want to partner, we want to support any initiatives,” said Tom Rubel, IHCC executive dean of regional economic advancement.
IHCC officials noted that the career academy offered to students has been quite successful and has expanded. Also, dual-credit classes in composition, horticulture and agriculture have allowed students the opportunity to gain college credit while completing high school requirements.
“It has been a great partnership. Students are getting a lot out of it,” said Karen Swanson, IHCC coordinator of high school programs.
